120. Living Through School Crises

Category: School Environment
Time: Saturday, March 10, 11:00am-12:30pm
Room: Room 42

When four major crises, including the homicide of a student, struck Bayonne High School in one year, the principal turned the collective grief into positive action. As a result, the school was selected by USA Weekend magazine as the national model of a safe school in the spring of 2000. Programs instituted by the principal reduced the incidents of vandalism, violence, and substance abuse by 42 percent in just one year. The principal will chronicle the four separate crises that befell his school during that horrific year. Videotape of the news reports covering the homicide in the school will be analyzed. Effective ways to deal with the media and risk reduction solutions and climate improvement strategies implemented will be discussed. Participants will learn how to deploy a crisis management response team, set up counseling areas, and use community resources.
