140. Assessing the Impact of a Statewide School Violence Prevention Initiative

This workshop will summarize the findings from an evaluation of one state’s Safe Schools Initiative. Under this initiative, more than 400 schools received nearly $20 million in grants to implement programs and activities to prevent or reduce school violence. The presentation will describe what schools are doing—from classroom based curricula to metal detectors and video cameras—and how schools are going about deciding what equipment or programs are best. Barriers to implementing a comprehensive school safety strategy will be discussed, and recommendations for improving the process of school safety planning will be presented.
