Ten years after the landmark Carnegie Corporation report Turning Points: Preparing American Youth for the 21st Century, a new book, Turning Points 2000: Educating Adolescents in the 21st Century provides in-depth information on implementing the Turning Points principles for improving middle grades education. Authors Anthony W. Jackson and Gayle A. Davis will summarize critical elements of the book, which synthesizes the experiences of hundreds of schools and the most current research on middle grades reform. Session participants will then participate in round table conversations designed to explore in-depth some of the key findings from Turning Points 2000 from the perspective of middle grades administrators. What are essential roles for principals in leading middle grades reform? Are middle grades principals prepared to meet the challenge? What does it take, personally and professionally, to implement the Turning Points vision? The session will close with a town hall meeting to share insights, and to consider what NASSP can do to further effect middle grades reform.
