257. From Vision to Action—The Principal’s Role in a School Counseling Program

(Note extended time period for this session.) Twenty-first century successful and effective schools require all students to acquire attitudes, knowledge, and skills in academic, career, and personal/social development. The principal’s vision and leadership are essential to implement a national standards-based school counseling program. This shift from a service-driven model to an effective and accountable, student competency–based model, will positively impact the school environment, is accountable, and will improve school achievement for all students. Participants will become familiar with the content of the national standards and the student competencies; examine the relationship of the national standards to educational renewal initiatives, including Breaking Ranks; hear from practitioners about the results of successful implementation models; learn how the national standards increases the effectiveness of school counseling programs and positively impact school environment; acquire the knowledge and skills to begin to implement the national standards; and learn how to evaluate the effectiveness of a school counseling program. This workshop combines presentation, discussion, and hands-on activities and will help you get the results you need from your school counseling program!
