113. Committee on International Programs Open Forum Turning the Tide: Changes in UK Education
Category: Diversity
Time: Saturday, March 10, 11:00am-12:30pm
Room: 28 & 29
The United Kingdom has experienced unprecedented change in the organization, content, and funding of education over the past 12 years. All of this change has been top down, imposed on schools and enforced by a punitive inspection system, forcing schools to change their ways over the past decade, but not without considerable damage to the system and the people who work within it. There is now a growing movement for schools to take back the initiative and turn the tide of misery and despair that sees thousands of good teachers leaving the profession every year. This presentation will be made by Mick Brookes, the president of the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT), and Gareth Matthewson, head teacher of one of the largest comprehensive schools in the United Kingdom.
