318. A Cocurricular Model That Can Enhance School Culture and Ensure Success in Your School

Category: Curriculum & Instructional Strategies
Time: Monday, March 12, 9:30am-11:00am
Room: Room 21

Cocurricular programs—especially athletics—play a significant role in the life of U.S. high schools. They have been described as the front porch of the schoolhouse. Community perceptions of the local school can be enhanced by its strong cocurricular programs. The presenter will explain how one public school created a cocurricular program that has enjoyed incredible success. The model will focus on three key factors: a system used to hire and compensate good experienced coaches and advisors; a research-based academic support program that addresses academic eligibility; and collaboration efforts with the school curriculum that increase student participation and gives true meaning to “cocurricular.”
