First published in 1996, Breaking Ranks: Changing an American Institution presented a vision of a dramatically different high school of the 21st Century. Its 83 recommendations provided direction for high school principals around the country in making schools more student-centered by personalizing programs, providing support services and increasing intellectual rigor for all students. Breaking Ranks II: Strategies for Leading High School Reform, published in 2004, is a field guide to help principals and school leadership teams implement the best practices outlined in Breaking Ranks. The program for the 2005 NASSP Annual Convention has been designed to address the topic areas presented in both Breaking Ranks publications and Turning Points 2000, which recommends similar strategies for middle level schools. The codes which follow indicate the topic area a presentation addresses.

Topic Areas:

Leading for Student Learning (LSL)
Gaining the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to create high-performing learning communities.

Personalizing Student Learning (PSL)
Implementing strategies for personalizing the learning environment to promote student success.

Building Supportive Relationships (BSR)
Leveraging the resources of all stakeholders to create a web of support for staff and students.

Assessing Learning for Accountability (ALA)
Fulfilling the assessment and accountability expectations that have accompanied the standards movement.

Challenging Every Student (CES)
Identifying the underserved populations and discovering ways to serve them with proven practices and new approaches to curriculum and instruction.

Emerging Issues (EI)
Addressing some of the most prominent features of the evolving education landscape.

Please note that while presenters specified the suggested category for their session, NASSP cannot guarantee the content of the session presented directly concurs with the ideas carried in either Breaking Ranks publication or Turning Points 2000 recommendations.
