120. Closing the Achievement Gap: Second Chances for Overage Middle School Students
Category: Challenging Every Student
Time: Saturday, February 28, 1:00pm-2:30pm
Room: 221 B & C
Hosted by Principal Leadership
The number of over age learners is increasing as statewide accountability legislation included retention policies as part of the solution for academic failure. Over age learners give up and drop out. Students who have been retained need a chance to catch up, return to an age appropriate class, and graduate with their peers. This session provides a review of what’s working at 10 middle schools, including programs such as double-dose academics, telescoping (completing three years in two), half-year promotion, academic accretion academy, and no-more-marching-in-place core acquisition plans.
Presenter(s) for this Session:
Kay D. Woelfel
Assistant Professor, Department of Education
